Diamond stones (aka diamond files) are the best option to maintain ski and snowboard edges due to their ability to cut and polish the edge for a smoother, sharp edge. Ease of use, can cut or polish in any direction, long life, and very forgiving since they remove less metal than a file and, diamonds are a must have for any tuner. The heart of the diamond 'quiver' is the 200 and 400 grit diamonds for sharpening and polishing. A 100 grit diamond can be used for establishing edge geometry versus a fine file, while the finer grits can provide that extra level of smoothness for the more demanding. The flexible backings and unique moon shaped pattern of the Diaface Moonflexes are very popular. Maplus now offers a stiffed backed option, while SVST’s superior anodized aluminum backed diamond paper offers replaceable diamond strips and will last a lifetime.
 

Files are the traditional cutting tools for sharpening edges, establishing edge geometry (bevel angles) on skis and snowboards. Additional, panzer and coarse files are a must have for base repair and flattening tasks. To enable the sharpening and polishing of side edges, a panzer or course file in a 5 or 6° guide can be used as a sidewall cutter for backfiling.
 

While sharpening and polishing side edges and in order to cut the metal side edge only, the sidewall material needs to be planed or back-filed. Otherwise the cutting tool will get clogged with the sidewall material and reduce the efficiency and possibly the accuracy of the desired bevel. A sidewall planer, cutter or an edge guide (dedicated or multi-angle) with a steep angle and panzer or coarse file can used to clear the edge and provide a smooth side.
